Emergency Room Visit After DIY Procedure Goes Terribly WrongEmergency Room Visit After DIY Procedure Goes Terribly Wrong
A cautionary tale emerged from France this week, where a 40-year-old man required emergency surgery after an attempt at a risky at-home procedure led to a severe complication.
According to a report in the medical journal Urology Case Reports, the patient arrived at the emergency room in significant pain. The cause was a string that had been tied tightly around the base of his penis as part of a sexual practice, which then became irremovably stuck.
The man admitted to attempting a temporary, DIY enlargement technique, a dangerous practice that involves restricting blood flow. The situation escalated when he lost a small bead that was attached to the string, intended to make removal easier. Without this crucial component, the thin string became embedded in the swollen tissue, making it impossible to untie or cut safely at home.
Doctors faced a delicate situation. The tight band was cutting off circulation, posing a serious risk of permanent tissue damage. After initial attempts to remove the string with tools failed, the patient was taken into surgery. Urologists successfully removed the constricting band under anesthesia, and the man made a full recovery.
The case serves as a stark warning from medical professionals about the extreme dangers of such unsupervised practices. Doctors emphasize that any device or object designed to restrict blood flow to the genitals can lead to severe injury, including necrosis (tissue death) and long-term dysfunction, and should only be used under strict medical guidance, if at all.
